DHN calls for abstracts for its 2017 conference in Gothenburg, Sweden. The conference is organised by the Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Gothenburg and will be held at the Conference Centre Wallenberg, March 14–16, 2017.
DHN2017 invites submission of abstracts on any aspect of the digital humanities, but we particularly welcome contributions that address the topics below:
Nordic Textual Resources and Practices
As a number of databases with texts are emerging through critical editorial and other digitization projects, there is need for close collaboration on the possibilities for exploring, merging and comparing the collections across borders. We encourage proposals on practices, tools, platforms and analyses for new kinds of collaborations.
Visual and Multisensory Representations of Past and Present
This topic explores visualization in its many different configurations (visual, audible and multi-sensory) not only as a representation of data, but also as an interface, a mode of interpretation, and a tool for critical analysis. We invite scholars who want to explore and demonstrate visualizations in – and of – digital humanities, and within the fields of cultural heritage, digital culture, artistic practices, and platforms for research.
The Digital, the Humanities, and the Philosophies of Technology
How do the fields of media theory and different philosophies of technology concerning the relation of man, machine and environment relate to current debates within the field of digital humanities? How can we apply for example posthuman, media archaeological, philosophical and anthropocentric perspectives to the question of the digital within the academic practice?
Forms of presentations
1) Posters. Posters (abstracts: 750 words) can be proposed in any topic. They can show on-going projects or present a tool or software. Posters (format AO) will be displayed throughout the conference at the venue site and should be self-explanatory, visually catching, and provide contact information.
2) Long paper presentations. Papers (abstracts: 1500 words) present research results and/or methods or new digital resources, or discuss a theoretical or methodological question. Paper presentations are supposed to take 20 min plus 10 min time for Q&A.
3) Short paper presentations. Short papers (abstracts: 500 words) present research ideas, approaches and projects that are recently started. Short paper presentations are supposed to take 10 min time plus 5 min Q&A.
4) Panels. Panels consist of three to six participants who discuss a topic. It is expected that the panelists introduce themselves and their points of view briefly at the beginning of the panel and then start a moderated discussion. Panels are 90 min long, one third of the time is used each for introductory statements, panel discussion, and discussions with the audience each. The organiser/s of panels send in a short description of the panel’s topic (1500 words) together with a confirmed list of panelists.
5) Pre-Conference Workshops. Workshops take about half a day, prior to the conference (Monday morning to lunch/Monday afternoon). Proposals should include the workshop’s title and a short description of its topic (1500 words), contact information of the person/s responsible. They should also include the approximate number of participants and the kind of technical equipment that will be needed. The contact person will be responsible for communicating necessary information to the registered participants. Participants in the workshops must be registered for the conference.
Note: only one poster or paper per presenter or presentation team will be accepted. An additional proposal of a workshop or the participation in a panel is permitted.
The deadline for submitting poster, papers, panel and pre-conference workshop proposals to the Program Committee is extended to November 25, 2016. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by 1 February, 2017. Submit your proposal here.
