It seems that Miller was not allowed to be very involved in some aspects of the post production process, and had indeed intended for the banshee shots to be much darker and shadowed. The story is good, the characters are just a bit over-the-top and very fun to watch, the action choreography is unlike anything I've seen before, and it never lets you take a breath. The use of mostly practical effects is admirable and well-done, but it does not save the film from coming across as mediocre and unsatisfying once the credits roll. First of all, being a Horror fan, I always like seeing such combinations of sub-genres, in this case the supernatural Ghost Story and Monsters sub genres. This is not to say that the others in the movie were bad, just that these two were the ones pulling the heaviest load. Meaningless subplots that are ploys to get you to care about the characters. It's macabre, bizarre, gory, and ludicrous, this Rob Zombie masterpiece will be either loved or hated. The banshee's scream can only kill you if you scream at the same time, presumably to prevent the death of every character in the film in the first twenty minutes of the film.
In the present day Professor Isla Whelan and her two assistants are researching and labeling historical artifacts in the basement of the university where she works and they find an Irish glove and map with the name Duncan. Described as a woman in white with a ghostly complexion and long white hair, she appears as a wailing spirit. I hate these movies and the fact that 'After Dark' studios picked one up and marketed and distributed it as part of their series is disgusting. The other actors aren't that famous although they did appear in other horrors or even blockbusters. Since it tends to focus on setting up scares with the creature tormenting people rather than going for the offensive and striking vicious deaths, itself a blessing and a curse due to the fact that it's got some pretty good jumps because of the set-ups but the body count is way too low for these types of films and there's not too much gore to go around because of that, overall this tends to make for an incredibly suspenseful tale at times when it's not focused on the bloodshed on display. It's always the same crap with all those types of movies.
The banshee attacks are a combination of real and psychological, so you never know what is happening. After watching the movie - you surely wanna see only trailer. These man-like critters critter were made famous in the horror world by the incomparable Warwick Davis in the Leprechaun franchise. What they didn't count on was a Sherlock Holmes type hostage or that this may be far more than just a bank robbery. In 1188 Ireland, some warrior horsemen chase and attack a red-cloaked figure. I saw it coming and was hoping that wasn't it. The blood do runs now and then, but it's never gory or extreme on any parts. Back in the present- the action follows an archaeologist as she accidentally unearths said ancient and very pissed off spirit who happens to have the ability to murder using only her ear-piercing scream. There is a rift between her and her mom which was never fully developed, as none of the characters were developed. They managed to skewer the woman, who falls off her horse. This film is virtually a collage of disturbing yet artistic visuals, in a morbid way, intermixed with some grotesquely colorful characters committing murder and mayhem and having an incredibly good time doing it.
It contains an — admittedly rather cool looking — decapitated head of a medieval old hag that somehow remained intact. This movie should be an incredibly exciting thrill ride. Patricks day himself, the Leprechaun. Not that bad, albeit definitely not scary and very disappointing for a film that's supposedly horror festival material. Supergator, Maneater, Wyvern, Sunshine, Goblin, The Final, Splinter, Headless Horseman and maybe a few others. . The acting is actually quite good all around. A sterilized mood and atmosphere as though it was tested at a focus group consisting entirely of 12 year olds. Add the fact that the movie's plot is disjointed, wastes time on characters and subplots that make no difference to the story and I didn't understand anyone's motivation for the things they do. The ending was just silly. Alongside the gauntlet is a map, which leads the group to a hidden room in their storage warehouse. They learn soon that the head is from a Banshee and in accordance with the mythology they are doomed to die.
